"The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. 'I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.'" -Genesis 12:1-9 One Christmas, my mammaw thought she was being clever: she decided to give all six of her children a Christmas ornament that said "Mom's Favorite" on it. One by one, each of the kids opened their gift, feeling special. It wasn't until some time later that the siblings realized that all of them were "mom's favorite!" As we continue in our Promise and Threat series, God gives Abraham a lot of promises. At times, it feels a bit scandalous. It feels a bit like God's playing favorites in Genesis. It makes us wonder, "Why Abraham? And what does this promise have to do with us?" God's not a trickster like my mammaw was that Christmas. But God's also not playing favorites, either. God promises Abraham blessings--but that's not the only thing. God blesses Abraham to bless everyone. And that is truly good news for us today.
